Heat Pump Repair and Installation in Sacramento

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run backwards. In a climate with hot summers and winters that seldom drop far below freezing, it does both jobs well, and SMUD pays toward replacing a gas furnace with one.

Why heat pumps suit the Valley

Sacramento's winter is cool, damp and foggy rather than cold. Nights near or just below freezing come in December and January; long stretches in the teens do not. That is comfortable territory for a modern heat pump, which loses efficiency only in much colder weather than this. The summer side is the ordinary air conditioning job, and a heat pump does it with the same outdoor unit and the same refrigerant circuit.

What SMUD pays, as of 2026

In February 2026 SMUD raised its residential heat pump rebates, citing the expiry of the federal tax credits at the end of 2025 and state incentive programmes that had run out of money. The figures SMUD published:

SMUD's rebate page says the HVAC system has to be a qualifying two-stage package system with at least 15.2 SEER2, or a variable-stage heat pump, and it has to be installed by a participating contractor in the SMUD Contractor Network. Rebates change; confirm the current terms on smud.org before you sign anything, and ask the company quoting whether they are in the network.

Heat pump problems that are not faults

Steam from the outdoor unit in winter

That is a defrost cycle. On foggy mornings frost builds on the outdoor coil and the unit reverses for a few minutes to melt it. A cloud of vapour is normal; a unit encased in ice is not.

Air that feels lukewarm

Heat pump air comes out cooler than furnace air, often in the 90s rather than the 120s, and it runs longer to do the same job. That is how they work.

Auxiliary heat on the thermostat

Some systems have electric strip heat as a backup. If the thermostat shows auxiliary heat running on mild days, the settings or the heat pump need a look, because strip heat is expensive on a SMUD bill.

Faults that are faults

A heat pump has every failure an air conditioner has (capacitors, contactors, fan motors, refrigerant leaks) plus a reversing valve that switches between heating and cooling and a defrost control. A unit that heats but will not cool, or the reverse, often points to the reversing valve or its solenoid. One that ices solid in December points to defrost controls or low refrigerant.

Going from gas to a heat pump

The conversion is more than swapping a box. The gas line to the furnace is capped, the electrical panel needs capacity for the new equipment, the ducts that suited a furnace may be undersized for a heat pump's longer, cooler airflow, and a permit with the energy code paperwork applies. In older Land Park and East Sacramento houses with 100-amp panels, the panel is often the first conversation. A good quote addresses all four, and the SMUD rebate is applied for by the contractor in most cases.

Ductless heat pumps

For a Midtown flat with no room for ducts, a converted garage, or one hot upstairs room, a ductless mini-split is a heat pump in a smaller form, with an outdoor unit and one or more wall heads. It is often the cheaper fix for a single problem room, and it avoids the attic entirely.

Common questions

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in a Sacramento winter?

Yes. Sacramento winters rarely stay below freezing for long, which is well within what current heat pumps handle. The air will feel cooler than furnace air and the system will run longer, both of which are normal.

How much is the SMUD heat pump rebate?

SMUD published up to $3,000 for a gas-to-electric heat pump HVAC conversion and $1,000 for an electric-to-electric upgrade, effective February 2026. Installation by a SMUD Contractor Network company is required. Check smud.org for the current terms.

Why is my heat pump blowing steam?

It is defrosting. On cold, damp mornings frost forms on the outdoor coil and the unit reverses briefly to melt it. It usually lasts a few minutes.

Do I need a new electrical panel?

Not always. Many older Sacramento houses have 100-amp panels, and whether a heat pump fits depends on what else is on the panel. A load calculation as part of the quote answers it.

Are you a heat pump installer?

No. This is an advertising and referral service. The quote, the installation and any rebate paperwork come from the independent heating and air company your request goes to.
