Air Conditioning and Heating Help for Sacramento Homes
Tell us what the system is doing and one local heating and air company calls you back. No bidding list, no charge for the referral, and straight answers about whether an old unit is worth fixing.
If the AC quit in the heat: check the thermostat is on Cool, check both breakers, and if the outdoor unit hums but its fan will not turn, switch the system off so the compressor does not overheat. Close the west-facing blinds. Then call.

What AC repair costs in Sacramento
Most repairs are one of the cheap parts: local companies generally quote a capacitor or contactor at $150 to $450 including the visit. Refrigerant leaks and fan motors land from a few hundred to under two thousand; a compressor runs into the thousands.
Why Sacramento is hard on air conditioners
The city averages around 23 days a year at 100 degrees or more, and the record set in 2024 was 45. Downtown hit 116 on September 6, 2022, the hottest reading in its history. Those are the weeks when weak capacitors, tired fan motors and slow refrigerant leaks finally give out, and every company in the county is booked at once.
Most nights the Delta breeze rescues the house: cool air off the Bay comes through the Carquinez Strait, the evening temperature drops, and the system catches up. When the breeze fails and the nights stay warm, the system never rests. That is when a borderline unit stops.
Old houses, newer equipment
Much of Sacramento was built before central air was normal. Land Park dates from the late 1920s, East Sacramento's Fab Forties from the same era, and the postwar ranch tracts in Arden-Arcade and the Pocket were finished long before anyone fitted ducts. The air conditioning was added later, the ducts run wherever they would fit, and the air handler often sits in an attic that is hotter than the street. Natomas is the opposite case: 1990s and 2000s houses whose first systems are now reaching the end of their lives.
Repair or replace is a bigger question this decade
Two things changed the arithmetic. New air conditioners stopped using R-410A refrigerant in 2025, and the supply of R-410A for repairs is being stepped down, so leak repairs on older systems cost more than they did. And SMUD raised its heat pump rebate to up to $3,000 for homes switching from a gas furnace, after the federal tax credits ended in 2025.
Replacing a system also means a permit and California's Title 24 energy-code testing, which most quotes include and some quietly leave out. The guides cover each of these.
The cheapest time to deal with an ageing system is before the first 100-degree week. Call or send a request and a local heating and air company will look at it.
Who you are actually dealing with
When you call the number on this site, your call goes to an independent local heating and air company that covers your part of Sacramento. They diagnose the system, quote the work and do it, and your agreement is with them. Before they start, check their licence on the Contractors State License Board site: for this trade it should be the C-20 classification.

Common questions
What does it cost to use this service?
Nothing. The referral is free and there is no obligation. You pay the heating and air company that does the work, directly, at the price you agree with them.
What is the most common AC repair in Sacramento?
A failed run capacitor, especially during the first run of 100-degree days. It is a small part that heat wears out, and replacing it generally costs a few hundred dollars including the visit. Contactors and condenser fan motors come next.
Which areas are covered?
The City of Sacramento, from Natomas to the Pocket, plus Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova. If you are just outside those, call with the ZIP code.
Is my old system worth repairing?
It depends on the repair and the refrigerant. An electrical part on any system is usually worth fixing. Refrigerant work on a pre-2010 R-22 unit, or a compressor on a unit past 15 years, usually is not, and SMUD's heat pump rebate can change the sums further.
Does SMUD give rebates for new heating and cooling?
Yes, for heat pumps. SMUD published rebates of up to $3,000 for replacing a gas furnace system with a heat pump, and $1,000 for an electric-to-electric heat pump upgrade, starting February 2026. A SMUD Contractor Network company has to do the installation.
Can I just ask a question without booking anything?
Yes. Plenty of calls end with an answer rather than a visit: a frozen coil that needed a new filter, a thermostat on the wrong setting, a breaker. That is a good outcome.
Are you an HVAC company?
No, and you should know that before you call. Sac HVAC Pros is an advertising and referral service. Your call or request goes to one independent local heating and air company, which quotes and does the work. We do not hold a contractor licence or perform repairs.
