Your AC Quit During a Sacramento Heat Wave: The First Hour

Updated 2026-10 · Sacramento, CA

A round smart thermostat on a wall, its display set to heat to 63 degrees

Minute one to ten

  • Look at the thermostat. Cool mode, set below the room, screen lit.
  • Go outside to the condenser. Is the fan on top spinning? Is the unit humming, silent, or clicking?
  • If it hums but the fan is still, switch the system off at the thermostat now.
  • Check the breaker panel for the AC and furnace breakers, and the disconnect box on the wall by the outdoor unit. Reset a tripped breaker once only.
  • Check the filter. If it is clogged, take it out.
  • Look for ice on the copper lines. If there is any, set the system to Off and the fan to On to thaw it.

Those checks find the problem, or rule out the simple ones, in most cases. What they do not do is fix a failed capacitor or contactor; that needs a technician with a meter, because the capacitor holds a charge even with the power off.

Keeping the house livable while you wait

Sacramento heat is dry, and the house holds heat in the walls and attic long after the sun goes down. A few things buy hours:

  • Close blinds and curtains on the west and south sides before noon.
  • Run ceiling fans, which cool people rather than rooms, and switch them off in empty rooms.
  • Skip the oven and dryer. Cook outside or not at all.
  • Once the Delta breeze arrives and the outdoor temperature drops below indoor, open windows on opposite sides of the house and use a box fan blowing out to pull the cool air through.
  • Shut the windows again in the morning, before the outdoor temperature passes the indoor.

If anyone in the house is elderly, very young, pregnant or has a heart or lung condition, do not wait out a 105-degree afternoon in a hot house. Sacramento County announces cooling centre locations when it opens them during heat advisories, and a library, a relative's house or a mall works too. Heat illness symptoms (confusion, a very high temperature, no sweating) are a 911 call, not an AC call.

What to tell the company when you call

A clear description lets the technician bring the right parts. Say whether the outdoor fan spins, whether the unit hums, whether there was ice, whether a breaker tripped, roughly how old the system is, and where the indoor unit is. "Humming outside, fan not turning, eight-year-old system, furnace in the attic" is a capacitor until proved otherwise, and a technician who hears that will usually have one on the van.

Why the outage happened this week

Heat waves concentrate failures. A capacitor that was already weak, a coil half-blocked with cottonwood fluff, or a slow refrigerant leak can get through a 92-degree day and not a 108-degree one. In September 2022 downtown Sacramento reached 116, its hottest day on record, on the seventh straight day above 100. That is the kind of stretch when the queue for repairs gets long across the whole county.

How to avoid the next one

A spring check-up, ideally March or April when demand is lowest, catches most heat-wave failures: the technician tests the capacitor, looks at the contactor, cleans the outdoor coil and checks the refrigerant. It costs less than an emergency call in July and it is booked on your timetable rather than the weather's.

If yours has already stopped, call or send a request now with what the unit is doing, and a local heating and air company will call you back.

Where to go next

Common questions

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

No. Reset it once. If it trips again there is a fault, often a shorted compressor or fan motor, and repeated resets can make it worse.

Can I replace a capacitor myself?

It is a high-voltage part that holds a charge after the power is off, and a wrong rating damages the compressor. Leave it to a technician.

How hot is too hot inside the house?

There is no single number, but an indoor temperature in the high 80s and rising is a reason to move vulnerable people somewhere cooler rather than waiting for a repair.
